Sclerostin is a protein encoded by the SOST gene in humans. Sclerostin is a secreted glycoprotein with a C-terminal cysteine knot-like (CTCK) domain, and its sequence is different from that of the bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) antagonist DAN (differential selection gene in neuroblastoma) . Sclerostin is mainly produced by bone cells, but it can also be expressed in other tissues and has an anti-anabolic effect on bone formation.
