CD2 interacts with the antigen associated with CD58 (LFA-3) and CD48 / BCM1 lymphocytes to mediate adhesion between T cells and other cell types. CD2 is involved in T cell release and the cytoplasmic domain is involved in signal transduction. CD2 is a specific marker for T cells and NK cells, so it can be used in immunohistochemistry to identify the presence of such cells in tissue sections. Most T cell lymphomas and leukemias also express CD2, which allows the presence of antigens to be used to distinguish these diseases from B cell tumors.
